Access to documents and information is not an end in itself. These elements serve to analyze the system, its functioning, and its limitations, in order to better inform the debate surrounding it, both from a regulatory and an ethical perspective. Accordingly, OXA endeavors to produce reports based on consultations with specialists in the relevant disciplines, drawing on the available documents and information.
Transparency
While animal experimentation institutions frequently speaks of “transparency,” they actually refer to communication practices aimed at reassuring the general public rather than a genuinely open approach to requests for information or documents deemed sensitive or likely to provide arguments to opponents. OXA is working on policy proposals designed to ensure true transparency.
Enforcement of regulations
Laboratory inspection reports provide insights into how the enforcement of regulations is monitored by public authorities and the violations that have been identified. The OXA team is currently coding and analyzing the hundreds of inspection reports obtained by its president since 2020.
Project evaluation
For several years, one of the central issues in the debate has been the evaluation of animal experimentation projects by “ethics committees” prior to their approval. OXA is examining the model of the “Comités de Protection des Personnes” to assess the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of each system.
Framing the debate
Public debate often revolves around the question of whether we “can” do without animal experimentation, overshadowing the work of specialists who have explored its epistemological, sociological, political, psychological, and ethical dimensions from various perspectives. OXA is developing a “charter” aimed at encouraging the media to consult these experts and consider their research when addressing this topic.
